Are you feeling a bit lost in the sea of therapists and counsellors out there? Don't worry, you're not alone! Choosing the right counsellor can feel like a daunting task, but it's an incredibly important step towards improving your mental health and wellbeing. Let's dive into some friendly advice on how to find the perfect match for you.

Understanding Your Needs

Take a moment to reflect on what you're looking for:

  • What issues are you hoping to address?

  • Do you prefer a male or female counsellor?

  • Are you comfortable with online sessions, or do you prefer face-to-face?

  • Knowing your preferences will help narrow down your options and make the process less overwhelming.

Qualifications Matter

In the UK, the term "counsellor" or "therapist" are not protected titles, which means anyone can use them without any proper qualifications. That's why it's crucial to ensure your counsellor is properly qualified. Look for professionals registered with reputable bodies such as:

British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP)

UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP)

Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)

I am an accredited member of BACP which means I've gone through rigorous screening to evidence not only my level of qualification, but also my ongoing commitment to my continued professional development. These organisations maintain high standards and ethical guidelines, giving you peace of mind about your counsellor's credentials.

Specialisations and Approaches

Just like how we all have different personalities, counsellors have different specialities and therapeutic approaches. Don't be shy to ask potential counsellors about their methods and how they might help with your specific concerns. My training is in a modality known as Person-Centred counselling, and I've advanced my learning by doing training in CBT, NLP, and Solution Focused Counselling. I'm also a qualified meditation teacher and can weave in elements of Mindfulness for client who feel this is of benefit to them.

The Importance of Connection

Imagine trying to open up to someone you just don't click with – not ideal, right? The relationship between you and your counsellor is paramount. I offer a free initial consultation, which is a brilliant opportunity to gauge if you feel comfortable with me.

Practical Considerations

Let's not forget the nitty-gritty details:

Location: Is it easy for you to get to their office? Do you have suitable space at home or in another location for online/ telephone sessions?

Cost: Does it fit your budget? Remember to check if your health insurance covers counselling.

Availability: Do their session times work with your schedule?

Trust Your Gut

At the end of the day, trust your instincts. If something feels off, it probably is. The right counsellor should make you feel heard, respected, and supported. People who are appropriately qualified won't be offended by you asking about qualifications of their experience! I love talking about how I've got to where I am in my practice...

Taking the First Step

Remember, seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. It's okay if you don't find the perfect match straight away – it's all part of the journey towards better mental health.

So, are you ready to take that first step?
